Update to EU VAT Handling on Indiegogo (Aug 4th 2026)
We’re making changes to how EU VAT is handled on Indiegogo.
After reviewing our current approach, we’ve decided to pause Indiegogo’s support for EU VAT. As a result, EU VAT will no longer be applied automatically to contributions. This change will apply to both new campaigns and campaigns where EU VAT was previously enabled.
What’s changing for existing campaigns?
For campaigns that previously had EU VAT enabled:
- Any EU VAT already collected by Indiegogo will be transferred to the Creator.
- EU tax rates will remain available in campaign settings.
- Creators will be able to adjust these rates to offset the tax for Backers or issue refunds where appropriate.
We encourage affected Creators to review their tax settings.
What’s changing for new campaigns?
EU VAT will no longer be enabled for new campaigns. The default tax rate settings for EU locations will be unlocked and preconfigured based on the applicable VAT rate for each EU country, regardless of the Creator's country of residence. These settings can be edited as needed before the campaign starts.
What about UK VAT?
There is no change to UK VAT handling. Indiegogo will continue to support UK VAT as before.
What does this mean for Creators?
Indiegogo will no longer automatically manage EU VAT through the platform. Creators remain responsible for determining whether VAT or other tax obligations apply to their campaigns and for meeting those obligations. It is worth emphasising that these changes require no action from Backers.
Because tax requirements depend on individual circumstances, we recommend consulting a qualified tax professional if you are unsure how this change affects your campaign.
We understand that changes to tax handling may require some adjustment. Our goal is to make the transition as straightforward as possible, and we’ll continue to provide relevant guidance through our Help Center.
Indiegogo currently functions as a marketplace facilitator in the EU, UK, and US. In practice, this influences how orders from backers in these regions are processed and may impact the way taxes are handled.
VAT in the UK
The rules are very similar to those outlined for the European Union. Following scenarios may apply:
|
|
UK VAT treatment |
|
| Where are your headquarters based? | Parcels sent to UK backers from outside of UK directly (e.g. from China). | Parcels sent to UK backers from UK-based hub/factory (imported in bulk containers or manufactured in the UK). |
| United Kingdom | VAT is collected during checkout. Indiegogo handles VAT for orders under 135 GBP; for orders above this threshold, the creator is responsible. | Creator is responsible for handling VAT. |
| Rest of the World | VAT is collected during checkout. Indiegogo handles VAT for orders under 135 GBP; for orders above this threshold, the creator is responsible. | Indiegogo handles VAT - VAT is collected during checkout. |
When Indiegogo is responsible for UK VAT:
- VAT is collected on pledges during all phases of the project (Crowdfunding, Late Pledge, Pledge Manager).
- Backers pay VAT at the time their pledge payment is processed.
- The applicable VAT rate depends on the customer’s country.
- Indiegogo remits VAT funds to the appropriate authority.
